Under funding of our schools
Our government has not kept up its word. From fully funding IDEA, to making sure we have the resources we need in the classroom, to ensuring we have great teachers in every classroom, we will continue to advocate for the funding our students deserve.
Protecting our educators
Educators do not get in to the profession to become rich. We do it to make the world better. We make sacrifices for the students and our communities in exchange for the promise of a secure retirement. Attacks on pensions, GPO and WEP are attacks on educators. In addition, in the world we currently live in, we have to come up with common sense solutions to keep educators and students safe in our schools and on the school busses. We must demand that our representatives in Congress do their job and come up with solutions that make sense.
Excessive testing and using unreliable measures to punish educators and schools
Assessments are useful ways for us to know what students have mastered and where they still need more help. They were never designed, however, to measure the success of a school. We know that so many other factors will affect student test scores: poverty, hunger, community, home, and outside influences. Until we can control those influences, students may never truly reach their full potential, and no amount of test and punish will change that. We have a great opportunity to bring the community in to our schools and really support students who need it the most. By fighting for what our students need, we can really help them be their best.
